I normally order delivery, my favourites are the BBQ wings and the Mac and cheese loaded with ribs. I like that they make a lot of it from scratch which makes it taste healthier and fresher, it’s not too greasy unlike many takeaways. E.g. the Mac and cheese sauce is made using cashews!
Based in a large food hall in the centre of Sheffield, the only all vegan business in Kommune. Great to see a vegan place popping up in this central location. Grab a table, QR code shows you all the menus. You can order at the table, they charge a £1 order processing fee, or head over to the stand to order in person.
The lunch time deal, which actually finishes at 5pm Tues-Fri, is good value at £10 for a main, side and drink. Sides can either be mac and cheese, corn ribs or fries. I went with the southern fried burger, corn ribs and the strawberry lemonade. I also asked for a kids portion of the mac and cheese which was £6, the regular size is £9 which to me is a pretty high price point for a plain mac and cheese.
The corn ribs were delicious and crispy, the accompanying sauce had just the right amount of heat. The southern fried burger was very plain, iceberg lettuce and a mayo topping to me felt a little dated. My friend had one of the ‘beef style’ burgers and also felt it was quite basic. The seitan burger is however made in house and was good, not hard or chewy like some can be, the coating crispy and nicely spiced.
The strawberry lemonade was ok, a bit more like squash.
The mac and cheese was to takeaway for my daughter, who is a mac and cheese fiend and also vegan, but I had a little try before taking it home. I have to say it was very bland, no seasoning, no cheesy flavour, no real sauce or creaminess at all, and certainly no lovely gooey stretchiness. Very dry, almost like plain boiled pasta, with breadcrumbs on the top. My friend has had the mac and cheese on a previous visit, although theirs was creamy they also felt it had very little flavour and was not cheesy at all. I took it home, my daughter tried it and also agreed but ate it after adding numerous ingredients. Looking online it sometimes looks very yellow and saucy, so maybe the quality of this dish isn’t always consistent.
Overall I don’t know if I’d return, very mixed experience today and the menu for me was just not varied enough. But others really like it, so give it a try and make your own mind up about Herbivorous.
My husband orders a few times a week for me from here & WOW. My personal favourite is the mac n’ cheese which is definitely the best vegan substitute i have tried, i have eaten pretty much everything at this point and everything has always been perfect. Extremely fresh ingredients, i have only been a couple of times in person as i mainly have it ordered from ubereats & the quality has been impeccable on both. Staff are super sweet, i always look forward to receiving the notes they write on delivery bags! Otto especially is an excellent employee
First tried Herbivorous at Hatch in Manchester a few years ago, and I’ve always said it’s the best vegan food I’ve ever had! I was ecstatic to see they’ve opened in Sheffield, first visit today and it was phenomenal. Had the ribs and philly cheesesteak chips – amazing! Will be visiting regularly ❤️🌱
Delicious vegan food. We had the Nashville chick*n burger, Mac and ‘cheese’ with bbq ‘ribs’ and loaded fries. It was sooo tasty and we can’t wait to return 🙂 also Robyn and the team are lovely and Kommune has a great atmosphere. Highly recommend!
