This place needs no advertisement. It’s literally the best ice cream shop in the city! Flavours were so well thought out and the ice cream was just delicious! We just had to go back another time because the ice cream just gave us so much happiness and joy!
We managed to try 11 flavours over 2 days and not a single flavour disappointed. We loved all of them! We tried milk, dark chocolate, blackcurrant sorbet, black sesame, cucumber mint sorbet, fried banana and butter, orange chocolate sorbet, cherry and cream, peach and tarragon sorbet, goat cheese and fig, and finally lavender. We also tried one of their milkshake and it was just refreshing.
Staff were extremely pleasant and nice, making the experience all the more wonderful. You can even see Mary making ice cream at the back of the shop. Fabulous and would definitely visit when I go back to Edinburgh again.
Given its popularity, be prepared to queue! Or if you’re like us, go early in the morning to beat the crowd! The queue was super long after lunch.
Update: second visit and I realised why I was so impressed by their milk ice cream. It’s got whipped cream or sth mixed in. It’s still pretty decent tho, but not exceptional. Dark chocolate was alright, pumpkin cherry was a little weird, there’s some spices in there and it’s not quite what you expect it to taste. The hot chocolate is not too sweet, but not chocolatey enough at all. The hazelnut ice cream was dreamy though, it’s very clean tasting with a strong hazelnut fragrance.
Verdict:must visit, come here for the hazelnut ice cream
Salted caramel can be abit sweet obviously, but their milk ice cream base is perfection. Super creamy, not overwhelming in any way, balanced and not overly sweet. It’s one of the best ice creams I’ve ever had, esp since it’s on the softer side.
Must try
This was something I was really looking forward to on this trip, and it did not disappoint.
There are a bunch of really. I had a three scoop bowl and I was in heaven. The salted caramel and the dark chocolate were to die for. I am writing this. I am intending to go back for a milkshake 😄
Definitely worth the hype!
Mary’s Milk Bar in Edinburgh is a must-visit for gelato lovers, especially if you’re a fan of rich, high-quality flavors. We opted for the dark chocolate gelato, and it exceeded all expectations. The gelato had an incredibly smooth and creamy texture, with a deeply satisfying, intense chocolate flavor that was perfectly balanced—not too sweet, and with just the right hint of bitterness. You could tell it was made from premium ingredients, with a real artisanal touch.
The shop itself has a charming, retro vibe, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to linger. The staff are friendly and helpful, making the experience even better. They offer a wide variety of flavors, which rotate regularly, giving you an opportunity to try something new with each visit.
Overall, Mary’s Milk Bar provides a delightful gelato experience, perfect for a sweet treat while exploring the heart of Edinburgh. Highly recommended for all dessert enthusiasts!
Nice ice cream in beautifully fairy tale looking old town Grassmarket Edinburgh, other side of the beautiful view of the Edinburgh castle as well. Friendly staff. Line can be quite long, but served quickly.
