Rough Hand Made, Britannia Pavilion, Royal Albert Dock, Liverpool
Rough Hand Made is an artisan bakery located in the picturesque Britannia Pavilion at Royal Albert Dock, Liverpool. Renowned for its fresh, handcrafted baked goods, the bakery offers a unique blend of Mediterranean-inspired pastries, breads, and cakes. Every item is made on-site using traditional techniques, emphasizing quality and flavour.
The space is inviting and rustic, with an open-plan bakery that allows customers to see the baking process in action. The aromas of freshly baked bread and pastries waft through the air, enhancing the cosy ambience. Whether you’re stopping by for a flaky croissant, a savoury pastry, or a sweet treat, Rough Hand Made provides a warm and authentic experience.
Set against the backdrop of the historic Royal Albert Dock, this bakery is a perfect spot to enjoy a delightful snack while soaking in Liverpool’s waterfront charm.
Rough Hand Made is a must-visit spot for croissant lovers.
If you’re planning a visit, my advice is to avoid weekends unless you’re prepared for a long queue. For the best experience, aim to go on a weekday before 2 PM—otherwise, you might find many items sold out (as I did on one visit, with barely anything left to choose from).
Here are my top picks:
1. Plain Croissant – Big, with a perfectly crunchy exterior and a rich, chewy interior. It’s delicious and comes at a very reasonable price.
2. White Chocolate Croissant – While it’s a bit too sweet for my taste, it’s definitely worth trying at least once. The sweetness of the white chocolate paired with the buttery croissant is a treat you can’t go wrong with.
3. Dulce De Leche Croissant – Filled with caramel, it’s slightly less sweet than the white chocolate version but offers a delightful caramel sensation.
These croissants are generously sized—you could easily share one with a friend. Beyond croissants, their other baked goods are equally impressive, so don’t hesitate to try something new!
As for the coffee, it’s nothing extraordinary, but a hot latte or cortado pairs perfectly with their pastries.
Lastly, the staff are very friendly and helpful (at least in my experience), which adds to the overall charm of the place.
Some of the best croissants I have ever tasted and, without a doubt, the largest! My friend and I shared the milk chocolate chip croissant and the white chocolate croissant. Both were divine: indulgent, flaky, chocolatey, buttery – just delicious! I had passed this place before on a previous trip to Liverpool and it was soooo busy that I gave it a miss; luckily, on the current visit, we miraculously managed to get served without a queue AND grab a bench while we ate! They might need to put a few more seats in here for when the weather gets rough out on the docks, but I can see why they would want to maximize the serving area instead. My friend tried the espresso and was suitably impressed, but the main draw here is certainly the baked goods.
Seriously an amazing bakery. The croissant is crispy on the outside and soft light and airy on the inside. Highly recommend! Also their hot chocolate is seriously amazing! It’s not some powder and water, no. They pour hot milk over real chocolate in front of you and once you try it you can never go back to the powdered stuff. Must try if you’re ever in Liverpool!
Best Bakery in Liverpool 🥐🧁
A stroll on the Albert dock is not complete without a stop at Rough Hand Made Bakery! Breakfast croissants, cakes and more, these gigantic pastries will ensure you are not leaving with any room left in your stomach. If you have a sweet tooth this place is for you!
We visited on a morning walk for breakfast. It had seating available inside and all of the food is cooked directly in front of you! A unique dining experience! We will definitely be returning on our next trip to Liverpool 🏫
