Just popped into the Library of Birmingham to do some admin. So disappointed that there was no cafe and a conference in the Rep meant I couldn’t get a drink. So pleased the receptionist in the Rep Theatre pointed me in the direction of the Exchange. What a breath of fresh air to see a spacious airy public space in Birmingham! The Exchange is run by the University of Birmingham and what appeared to be a closed and derelict space has been restored to very high standard. And the huge roof lights allowed natural light to pour in. The cafe serves light snacks, cakes, sandwiches and hot and cold drinks. There are different seating arrangements. Lap top area, sofas, high and low tables and high back chairs. The coffee s good and so were the plain scones. There is also an info stand to get more info on the Africanise study of art works. I will definitely make this my choice of workspace when visiting Birmingham!
Restored to a really high standard with lots of interesting features. Guide was extremely informative and enthusiastic about the subject. Excellent cafe. A hidden gem well worth a visit.
The building is absolutely beautiful from outside and inside. A very spacious café with plenty of seating area surrounded by the beautiful marble interior of the old bank building. The menu offers brunch style food, including soup, sandwiches, quiche and others. There is a good variety of cakes and treats as well. There are plenty of drink options and coffee and teas. The staff are friendly. Overall good experience for a quick lunch and coffee.
First visit and we loved it .
Easy to find a seat at lunch time
We only wanted coffee and cake as we were off to a concert in the symphony hall which is nearby.
Tables were being cleared quickly . Nice atmosphere and interesting to be sitting in a former bank .
Toilets and an area for children to sit ..
Some very comfortable armchairs perfect for retirees
The menu looked good with homemade soup and a vegetable hot pot using produce from Winterbourne. This cafe is run by Birmingham university.
Absolutely amazing guided tour here today as part of an open buildings weekend. Would definitely recommend a visit if you are in Birmingham and at a loose end. Got to take a look at all the inner workings of the Municipal Bank in its heyday and our tour guide was super knowledgeable with plenty of facts and stories to keep us entertained. All finished off by a visit to the cafe for an excellent flat white and a delicious slice of cake. We will definitely be back! 😊
