The girl who served us food was very helpful. We asked not spicy food and we really had not have spicy food. Usually, it’s a big problem in Asian restaurants. Also, they have a separate vegan menu. Usually, it’s a big problem in Asian restaurants too 😅
We had an issue with our food, but the waitress fixed it very professionally. Highly recommend and will come back!
I enjoyed this Chinese restaurant very much. The atmosphere is casual and the service welcoming. The food is very good. The curry was nicely done, but they have a broad dish selection for you to try. The food feels authentic. The restaurant was very busy when we arrived but fortunately we did not have to wait for a table. Definitely a restaurant you should try if you feel like having Chinese food.
~4.2/5. When you see mostly Chinese inside, you know you have to go! A (for the most part) fantastic and lively authentic south chinese spot in the heart of Edinburgh. I recommend reserving to sit in.
We got a big table for 10 and tried a variety of menu options.
They have a la carte options or large plates to share over rice. Me and a buddy got their Spicy Pot and Egg fried rice to share. I liked the spicy pot concept; you get to choose 8 things to have coated in a numbing spicy (mala) oil and other seasonings, its moist but not very saucy. This was phenomenal and a great way to have a variety of things with rice. In particular, their fish was nice and soft, but not soggy or squishy. However they only had ~3 pieces of fish. The potatoes absorbed so much flavor and had a slight fried/crisp quality that was perfect with the oil.
However, their egg fried rice was disappointing. For 5.20 you’d expect them to jazz it a little rather than just have Egg, Oil and rice. You’re better off getting just plain rice to share.
Other satisfied friends got Dandan noodles (great portion, soupy and spicy), Sea bass in chili oil (I tried this, moist fish in a flavorful sauce, I love!), Salted egg prawn (a must try for those who love salted egg!!), mapo tofu, vegetable dumplings (good portion), and hunan pork.
One friend got the singapore mee which, although was a great portion, didnt taste of much apart from turmeric and salt. I hope this was a once-in-a-while bad dish, but he wasnt too happy.
I also had the Pu’er Tea, glad to see they have a variety of teas. It had good price/quality and I would get it again.
Service was friendly and quick, the lady was happy to serve us and they were generally quick with the food. The store was busy so I recommend reserving well in advance. They have a bar-style seating for solo dinners too. Because the shop is slightly crammed, it can sound a little hectic. One table nearby us was particularly loud and we could hear their entire conversation. Of course, this isn’t entirely the restaurants fault, but a problem enhanced by the compact nature of the shop.
The food at this restaurant is far from authentic Chinese cuisine. I ordered two Sichuan dishes, and both were lacking in spice and flavor, bearing little resemblance to real Sichuan food. It’s clear they need a skilled chef who understands the nuances of authentic Chinese cooking. Additionally, the service left much to be desired. The waitstaff was unfriendly and seemed more focused on rushing us through our meal than providing a pleasant dining experience. The only positive aspect was the unlimited rice, which at least helped to fill us up. Unfortunately, that’s not enough to make up for the lack of quality elsewhere.
Make sure to book a table at this Chinese restaurant to skip the long wait, because this place is always buzzing! Despite its small size, it packs a punch with a menu brimming with choices, making it a haven for food enthusiasts. What sets this spot apart is the authentic taste that stands out significantly from other Chinese eateries I’ve visited. Every dish I tried was simply outstanding, bursting with flavors that tantalize the taste buds.
I particularly fell in love with their grilled sea bass – it’s a must-try for anyone visiting. The sweet and sour crispy pork, which leaned more towards the sweet side but was undeniably scrumptious. The contrast between the crispy exterior and the tangy sauce made every bite a delight. Venturing further into the menu, I opted for the tofu with century egg, a dish not for the faint-hearted but absolutely rewarding for those who appreciate its unique taste – count me in as a fan!
Taking a gamble, I also sampled the pork intestine, a choice that might raise eyebrows for some but is truly a hidden gem for the adventurous eater. It was incredibly flavorful, proving that sometimes, the most unlikely dishes can be the most satisfying.
If you’re feeling bold, take a leap and pick a random dish from the menu. You might just be pleasantly surprised by the culinary adventure that awaits. This restaurant is a gem for anyone looking to savor genuinely delicious and authentic Chinese cuisine.
